How we started

Penny Scotton [nee Bateman] 1951 – 2000, founder of Pennies Day Nurseries.

A nursery teacher with a vision of a creative and innovative approach to working with children, Penny's many talents created a very special environment for the children in her care.

Having worked in nursery care in the UK and around the world Penny founded the first nursery bearing her name at Hockers Lane, Maidstone, in 1998. After Penny’s death her husband Philip, son Dominic and her daughter Zoe continue to run the company to the standards Penny established.

Pennies philosophy/standards

We have always been a family company, ensuring that the vision of our founder - Penny Scotton – is passed on directly to everyone involved in our work. Penny saw each and every child as a member of a very special family. Her mission to offer ‘the very best in childcare, learning and fun,’ has been behind every development of our work. The feel of the ‘Pennies Family’ remains central to all we do, from the particular care we take to understand the dietary need of each child to the regular meetings and social activities that allow parents and children to interact with staff and management at Pennies.

Above all, parents and children have a strong feeling of belonging at Pennies.

"A big heartfelt thanks, seems like we have been at Pennies forever. I cannot believe I met the wonderful Penny, who showed me around all those years ago. I am sure she will be looking down proudly at you all and what you have achieved."
